The three-letter word is the most basic satisfaction of human needs and is known to be the ultimate erotica. But did you know that sex has an anti-ageing effect too? Yes, according to medical science, sex helps one feel younger, lengthening mortality, relieving stress and pain and possibly diminishing the chances of cardiovascular disease.

According to doctors and sex experts, those having sex atleast thrice a week have a ''real age'' one-and-a-half to two years younger than those who have sex only once a week. Here ''real age'' means an estimation of age in biological terms, not according to the chronological years. A UK-based study found that men who reported at least two orgasms a week at the time of the study had less than half the risk of dying from various causes over the next 10 years.

"Sex acts as a rejuvenating factor and as a result has an anti-ageing effect," said Dr Tarun Bhora, a city based sexologist. "More frequently one indulges in it, the chances are one can get rid of his or her depression more quickly," said Saibal Roy, a psychologist.

"Getting pleasure from sex, feeling younger and energetic, getting rid of stress and diminishing the chances of heart related diseases — these are interrelated. So, one can avoid heart diseases to some extent by having sex frequently," said Dr Krishnendu Pal, a cardiologist.

So, does sex itself really extend our lives?

This claim is difficult to prove, but studies on ageing conducted at the Duke University found that the frequency of sexual intercourse (for men) and the enjoyment of sex (for women) predicted longevity. At the same time, a study in psychosomatic medicine has found that sexual dissatisfaction is a predictor of the onset of cardiovascular disease.

subhra.sircar@timesgroup.com
